End the War on Drugs

END THE INSANE WAR ON DRUGS!

While I agree that the present "war on drugs" (did obama declare it a 'domestic contingency operation'?) isn't working, I am concerned that the social and healthcare cost of treatment of a raft of new addicts would overwhelm the existing system in place to treat addiction. Crack cocaine is so addictive that it's not uncommon to find that first use creates dependency that only grows. I know you're hoping the cost will go down as the available supply goes up. Presumably addicts won't need to commit as many crimes to get the stuff -- but I don't get the legalize everything philosophy. It's the one sticking point that keeps me from morphing from an independent into a Libertarian.

    Perhaps a closed US border and the death penalty or international trafficking would be a better approach to "the war on drugs". Try buying dope on the streets of Singapore. The death penalty - where people are actually executed in a timely fashion - seems to work for them.
